Bamboo Fly Rods

What comes to your mind when you hear the word "Quality"?

For our clients the word quality is the same as our name: J. C. Byrd, Rodsmiths.

We produce handcrafted bamboo flyrods for the discriminating angler. Each rod begins from a specially selected culm of imported Tonkin Cane. From there it is heat treated for tempering, hand-split, and planed into 61.5 degree strips.

Each rod section (tip or butt) consists of 6 of these hand split, and planed strips that hold exacting tolerances within 1000th of an inch. These strips are then glued together with the best glues available.

Rods are varnished with a specially formulated varnish composed of traditional spar varnish and commercially available leveling agents. Once varnished, the rods are polished to a high sheen finish.

Each rod is fitted with a custom made cork grip made from the finest cork rings imported from Portugal. Reel seats, ferrules, snake guides and tip tops are then mounted on your truly one of a kind fishing instrument.

Chinese silk thread is used to wrap the guides on the rod and to provide some nice decorative accents at the grip, signature, ferrules and tip tops. These wraps are sealed with traditional spar varnish and allowed to cure.

Each client is provided with a custom made rod sock, and a rod tube to protect your future family heirloom while you are transporting it to and from your fishing destinations.

Our rods are designed to be utilized as fishing instruments, but with the proper care; your J.C. Byrd, Rodsmiths bamboo flyrod can be passed on to future generations of flyfishers.
